Salto del Buey is a waterfall located near the town of La Ceja in the Antioquia department, about 1.5 to 2 hours from Medellín by car. It sits within a private nature reserve that helps protect the surrounding ecosystem and offers access to several hiking trails and activities.

If you are looking to experience nature near Medellín, Salto del Buey is one of the most rewarding day trips you can take. The waterfall drops more than 70 meters and the surrounding landscape is just as impressive, with rich vegetation and open views.

Once you arrive at the reserve, there is typically an entrance fee to pay, which helps maintain the trails and protect the natural environment. In 2026, it is around 30,000 COP per person.

The hike itself is not very long. The main challenge is the descent to the waterfall, which requires extra caution since the rocks can be wet and slippery. Make sure you bring hiking shoes with you. The climb back up is more demanding, so it is important to pace yourself and take breaks when needed.

The views along the way down are absolutely beautiful, with lush vegetation and wide open scenery.

Make sure to bring a raincoat with you, as the waterfall is so powerful that you will likely get wet from the spray.

If you are interested in other activities within the reserve, there is also a zipline and the option to go rappelling.

Hey there!

I’m Sofía, a soft explorer and a Colombian living in France. I love traveling and discovering new places, especially nature spots and places linked to ecotourism. I’m into slow, meaningful travel, where I can actually take my time and experience things instead of rushing through them. I also care about comfort, so I usually look for a balance between nature, simplicity, and feeling good while I travel.
