Mont Saint Michel is probably one of the most famous places in France. It is a small rocky island in Normandy, with a medieval abbey on top. It is quite unique since it is surrounded by the ocean at high tide and connected to the land at low tide.

The island has been a sacred place for more than 1,000 years. According to legend, the Archangel Saint Michael appeared to a bishop in the year 708 and asked him to build a sanctuary on the rock. Over the centuries, monks built an abbey at the top, and a small village grew below it, protected by stone walls. Today, Mont Saint Michel is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

During the Middle Ages, pilgrims came from all over Europe to reach the Mont. The journey itself was part of the spiritual experience. Many pilgrims crossed the bay on foot. Today, Mont Saint Michel is still a place of pilgrimage.

Walking through Mont Saint Michel feels like stepping into the Middle Ages. It actually reminded me a lot of Harry Potter and Hogsmeade.

How to get to Mont Saint-Michel

To go to Mont Saint-Michel from Paris I recommend you take a bus or a train. Flixbus offers really confortable buses at prices as low as 60€ round-trip per person. The bus ride takes about 4h40. If you want to go by train, the best option is the direct train plus shuttle. You take a train from Paris Montparnasse to Pontorson, then a shuttle bus that drops you right near Mont Saint Michel. The total travel time is about four hours and the price is also around 60€ round-trip per person. Booking early helps keep the price low.

What to do in Mont Saint-Michel

On day one, I suggest you arrive early in the afternoon and walk across the bridge toward the Mont. Spend the afternoon exploring the village streets and go visit the abbey if you have time. The abbey is the main monument and inside, you will see chapels, large stone halls, and panoramic terraces.

On the second day, I suggest walking around the bay. The views are stunning, and you’ll see lots of sheep, especially the Roussin de la Hague, which are iconic for their white wool and black legs and face.

How much does a weekend in Mont Saint-Michel cost

Prices really vary depending on your accommodation and meals. A budget trip will probably cost 130€ – 200€ per person whereas a mid-range trip with a nicer hotel 220€ – 350€ per person.

Is a weekend actually enough to visit Mont Saint-Michel?

I do think a weekend is enough to visit Mont Saint-Michel calmly. If you want to visit other places like Saint Malo during your trip, then three or four days should be enough.
